Fire Agate/aqeeq:
Fire agate, a semi-precious natural gemstone, occurs only in certain areas of central and northern Mexico and the southwestern United States (New Mexico, Arizona, and California). Approximately 24-36 million years ago, massive volcanic activity during the Tertiary Period affected these areas. This volcanism formed fire agates when hot water, saturated with silica and iron oxide, repeatedly filled cracks and bubbles in the surrounding rock.
Fire agates have beautiful iridescent rainbow colors, similar to opal. The alternating silica and iron oxide layers in fire agates create vibrant iridescent rainbow colors. These layers diffract light, allowing it to pass through and form an interference of colors within the stone’s microstructure. This phenomenon, known as the Schiller effect, is similar to that found in mother-of-pearl and is responsible for the fire effect that gives fire agates their name.
